It is definitely possible. I haven't tried it on automatic1111 ui but did this on other image generations platforms. Your going to work with (img2img, inpaint and controlnet combo) e.g you have a selfie of yourself and you want to edit yourself in the picture then you'll inpaint yourself and add controlnet depth and controlnet open pose. If you want to edit just the background then controlnet depth and controlnet canny is a nice combo.

you can do masking (for example with the extension "inpaint anything"), there you only select the background and create a mask for it. then in the img2img inpainting you prompt what you want there (you need a high denoising and "masked content" latent noise or latent nothing..

for automatic1111? and can you point me to an extension that lets all the controlnet types in the UI ? I'll try out your method. I personally edit like to edit the characters in an image and leave the background as is.... any tips for that ? Never used automatic1111 to that extent and have only experience with tensorart and mage so i'm most familiar with those platforms.
