Host MIDI module inputs aren't working with Moog sub37, user error?

What am I doing wrong?

I can play Cardinal with the sub37 as controller, but I can't play the sub37 with Cardinal as controller. This feels like a bug but I'm new to the sub37 and to Cardinal so I'm assuming user error.

Setup

1. Connect Moog sub37 via USB to Mac mini, Apple M2 chip, Sonoma 14.5
2. sub37 Editor app works great, MIDI is definitely communicating 2 ways with the sub37
3. Launch Cardinal standalone 24.05 and Enable/Reconnect MIDI from the Engine menu
4. Note: All devices have MIDI channel set to the default which is either 1 or All.

5. Play keys on the sub37, Cardinal responds. Manipulate the wheels (after connecting the outputs), Cardinal responds. Everything is great.

6. Now I try connecting Cardinal mods to the Host MIDI inputs, the sub37 does nothing. Here's what I've tried:

• Set up a sequencer through a quantizer to deliver vc in the range -5,+5 and route it to V/oct input on Host MIDI
• Add a Gate signal to the Gate input on Host MIDI
• Hovering the mouse over the Host MIDI inputs shows an active variable signali
• On the sub37, set Envelope Generator A Latch On (I have to do this when using the sub37 audio input, so I thought to try it)
• Ran a bunch of similar tests, nothing works
