nixos - doesn't work

Installed via vimPlugins.codeium-nvim,

  programs.neovim = {
    enable = true;
    plugins = with pkgs.vimPlugins; [
...
      codeium-nvim
...
    ];
    ...
  };

when I do :checkhealth codeium it says no heartbeat:

Codeium: checking Codeium server status ~
- OK API key properly loaded
- Checking server status
- WARNING Server is unhealthy
- Language Server binary: /nix/store/cq3hbryb00kp1c4yvj2wiaz8m0jq3vs6-codeium-1.20.9/bin/codeium_language_server
- WARNING No heartbeat executed

But when I run the executable from inside nvim, it seems to work, so it doesn't look like a problem with the executable. Any ideas?
