This may be a limitation of Android, however there was at least one case where I saw another pair of apps work correctly, while AnkiDroid did not. Specifically:

  • if you use Google Keep, and you put a webp with transparency into a keep (I prepared this on desktop, and it synced to mobile)
  • then if you open that image in keep and copy it on android
  • you can paste it into whatsapp on android and it will have transparency, but if you paste it into ankidroid it will not - it will just be a jpg

Why not? I don't know! It would be nice if we could support webp paste in AnkiDroid as well, since it seems to be possible

I'm also not certain if you can drag-n-drop images in tablet/chromebook mode, if you can do that and drop an image into the note editor, does it only do jpg or will it also handle png or webp with transparency?

I attempted to test this using a phone emulator in landscape with ankidroid + chrome splitscreen but was unable to drag an image from chrome. I believe this was just a limitation of the very limited test I attempted, but I didn't have time to try anything else with regard to drag-n-drop
