Interested in Contributing to a Larger Project

Hi, my name is Jigyasu. I am an engineering undergraduate. I recently made my first PR in bambi - #871.

I have taken an undergraduate course in probability and statistics and contributed to other open-source projects before. I would be happy to contribute to this project and hopefully participate in the GSoC 2025.

I will appreciate any help and guidance from the maintainers 🙂

Hey @jgyasu :) many thanks on the PR. Great to hear you would like to contribute to the project.

Depending on your familiarity with Bambi, it may be good to submit PRs to issues with the good-first-issue and or documentation tag. Nonetheless, feel free to attempt to resolve other issues. If you find an issue you would like to resolve, I would open a draft-PR where you re-iterate the issue, describe the general approach to resolving the issue, and outline any questions or uncertainties you may have.

As far as GSoC 2025 is concerned, I am not 100% sure if or what topics Bambi will be advertising. For GSoC 2024, we had an ideas wiki. But we would need to discuss with @tomicapretto on if Bambi is participating and what projects we would like to support.

Thanks for the welcome :) I am looking into other issues as well as solving one at hand right now. I will open draft PRs soon! Meanwhile I'd be happy to hear any inputs from @tomicapretto on the projects Bambi is aiming for in GSoC 2025.

Hi @jgyasu thanks for showing direct interest here and in the PRs you opened. As Gabriel said, we're not 100% sure we're participating, but if you're interested, we can increase the probability of it. In the following days I can take some time to sketch out one or two project ideas. It would be great if you could tell what you're interested in. There's room for all kind of contributions, not only fancy and complex modeling stuff.

Thank you! I am definitely interested in a long time commitment to this project and I have been going through the code base. I checked out last year's ideas and I wanted to know if this project Support BART has been already worked on? I found it interesting because not a long ago I was planning to create a function estimator.

If there is a slack or if the bambi community has any meetings between the members then I would be happy to join it and talk more about projects. In a broader sense, I am interested in translating any research or new model to code or interfacing any model from some other library in bambi but I am open to any community suggestions.

It's not that I want to ruin the party, but I think this one is not possible to be resolved until we change how we get predictions, which would be through the proper usage of pymc.sample_posterior_predictive(). But for that to happen, we first need to modify other internal things.

Will this be a large enough project for GSoC? If it is then we can consider this as well

It is great that you are taking on #818 and we appreciate it, but it is likely not large enough (or impactful) enough to be a GSoC project 😄 With GSoC, as we usually receive funding, we tend to reserve "bigger" and "high value" projects.
