🤖 Awful AI Award 2024: Call for Nominations

"Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should." - Dr. Ian Malcolm, watching 2024 AI developments, probably

🎭 What We're Looking For

We're seeking nominations for the most questionable, eyebrow-raising, "who thought this was a good idea?" AI applications/developments of 2024. You know, those special projects that make even GPT models go "yikes."

Nomination Categories:

  • 🚨 Most Ethically Questionable AI Implementation
  • 💸 Most Unnecessary Use of AI in a Product
  • 🤦 "AI Fixes Everything" Award for Most Outrageous Claims
  • 🎭 Best Performance in "AI Washing" a Regular Product
  • 🌋 Biggest AI Disaster that We All Saw Coming

📝 How to Submit

Please include:

  1. Name of the AI application/project/disaster
  2. Link to relevant documentation/news (if it hasn't been memory-holed yet)
  3. A brief explanation of why it deserves this dubious honor
  4. Your preferred coping mechanism after learning about it

⚠️ Requirements

  • Must have occurred in 2024
  • Must be verifiable (screenshots of deleted tweets count)
  • Must make at least three ethics boards collectively facepalm
  • Should inspire both laughter and existential dread

🏆 Prize

The winner will receive:

  • Eternal infamy in the AI Hall of Shame (aka Awful AI Award 2024)
  • A commemorative "404 Ethics Not Found" digital badge
  • The solemn head-shaking of future AI historians
  • A mandatory ethics course voucher (non-transferable)

Note: This is a serious initiative wrapped in dark humor because sometimes that's the only way to process what we've witnessed this year.

  1. Air Canada's Customer Service Chat Bot Fiasco
  2. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/feb/16/air-canada-chatbot-lawsuit
  3. The bot gave incorrect information causing customer to not be eligible for refund. But the worst part of this is Air Canada trying to argue they are not liable because a chatbot is a separate legal entity from the company.
