Special characters in usernames fail logins after the first

For our application users use email addresses for their username. If this email address has a + in it like [email protected] the username is created in wordpress as [email protected]. After the user logs out and tried to log back in authentication fails with this logged:

[20-Apr-2021 15:32:29 UTC] [AuthLDAP] The LDAP user does not have an entry in the WP-Database, a new WP account will be created
[20-Apr-2021 15:32:29 UTC] [AuthLDAP] Error creating user : Sorry, that username already exists!

If I don't get an internal ticket to fix this I am unlikely to fix it but if I do will you accept a PR?

I'd be happy to receive a PR to fix this. Though it might be an issue with WordPress' way of "sanitizing" usernames... 😕
