I couldnt get it working too.
Need to make a custom declaration .d.ts

import 'react-native'

declare module 'react-native' {
  type ClassName = string | string[]

  interface ViewProps {
    className?: ClassName
  }
  interface TextProps {
    className?: ClassName
  }
  // and others...
}
