Description of issue

Even though I cannot see in any of the changelogs it seems the --preinstall option is removed, at least it fails using the latest Homebrew 4.4.17-20-g55475cb version

brew update --preinstall
Error: Unknown option: --preinstall

Could someone please confirm this and give an insight why it's needed?

I can't find any documentation on this existing before, what were you using it for?

Actually, it was an inherited step in some GitHub CI builds (of syslog-ng)
I am unaware of how and why it was used earlier, but now I can see that it fails.
I could not find too much info about it either, I updated the command to brew update for now, and
I'm just curious about the purpose of it and the reason why the change is needed now.

Chances are that it never did anything. brew update used to silently ignore unknown flags, but was recently updated to error out upon encountering one.

I'm having trouble tracking down some documentation on --preinstall flag as well (and commenting to subscribe to thread).

It's odd how many references there are to brew update --preinstall in Github repos.

The --preinstall option was renamed to --auto-update in May 2022: Homebrew/brew#13299
