Car

As explained on the home page, the aim of the project is to add an onboard computer to a traditional RC car.

The project has been created to mount the onboard computer on any type of RC car. As long as the RC car is controlled using a 2.4GHz RC command, the onboard system will control the RC car the same way.

No electronic or mechanic modification is necessary on the RC car

The system can be mounted inside the body or on the roof, or both ways, because the camera is wired link to the system and can be placed wherever it is necessary.

Onboard computer (Raspberry Pi)

The board

The Raspberry pi has been chosen due to several points:

  • The easy way to install any operating system we want
  • A wide developper community
  • Ability to connect a tiny HD camera
  • Ability to connect wifi and RF dongle
  • Multiple I/O ports for further sensors improvements

Moreover, the small size and the low power consumption of the device allow a battery power source and an easy integration on the mini RC car.

Wifi communication

With a small WiFi dongle and the wide knowledge base on the topic, the device can easily be connected to a WLAN.

Camera

One of the most well known camera aviliable for the Raspberry Pi is a 1080i@30fps micro camera. It allows the pilot to receive an affordable real-time video stream form the RC car. Moreover, to deal with the low lentency of the system, those high specificaitons can be adjusted for exemple to 720p@30fps to reach a good balance between low latency and image quality.

RF communication

Even if the RC car can still be driven using the original RC command, it also can be controled with any gaming device (such as keyboard, gamdepad, driving wheel, or more ...).
