xg should support protein space graphs. Doing this is as simple as allowing the storage of raw characters in the sequence vector of the graph.
From what I can tell, there are negligible improvements in performance from using the 3-bit encoding that we have. Another arrangement should be evaluated that is flexible to support protein space graphs.
