LodLam Summit 2015
LodView is a brand new software released in december 2014 to help the Semantic Web spreading and to help developers and users in publishing data according to the W3C recommendations.
LodView is an open source IRI dereferencer but also a web site ready to use.
It gives Linked Data a new shape and is intended as a present for enthusiastic Semantic Web users built by even more enthusiastic ones.
If you want to adopt Linked Data principles for your project you’ll probably have to convince your boss or your client that it is the best way to store and put these data online.
To accomplish the task you have to provide some specific features: some technical and others more prosaic.
Firstly you have to adhere to some W3C standards and recommendations, such as put online all single resources and dereferencing them, in short you have to provide pure data to machines and web pages to humans.
Secondly you have to prove to Semantic Web non-believers that data, when exposed as Linked Data, are great, reusable and capable to unlock even more knowledge.
Right now LodView does it for you, it is ready for production environments and already used to offer different data representations of interesting resources around the world.
For the LODLAM challenge 2015 we want to add some LAM-specific widgets to LodView. We think that Linked Data are very, very, useful in cultural heritage matters so we are participating in this contest to investigate if the LAM community feels that LodView could be a precious tool for them.
We have two new widgets for you: a pedigree tree and a thesaurus.
- RDF inferences are very useful to extract knowledge from family relationships. If you are Peter’s mother and Peter has a daughter called Nora, you are Nora’s gramma even though it is not specified in the data. It’s easy to extract that information out of Linked Data but less simple to represent these relations in a stylish, useful way. We are working on it.
- We explored the Web searching for beautiful thesauri representations but we didn’t find any. So the next step is to find a way to represent these particular data making them even more valuable. We are working on it too.
Do you know lodlive? It's our first great interface able to represent semantic data. Nowadays at least 5000 Linked Data resources are explored using LodLive every month and a lot of publications and slides embed our graphs to spread and explain Linked Data principles.
The people behind LodView come from the very same team that developed LodLive. We build them both with love and with beautiful graphics and satisfying user experience in mind.
The team is composed by Diego Valerio Camarda (developer) and Alessandro Antonuccio (graphic designer), contact us at [email protected]
After this presentation, you obviously think that LodView is great, so, if you want to give it a try, go on http://lodview.it to test some examples or download it from http://github.com/dvcama/LodView and reuse it freely as so many people are starting to do.
These are some examples to explain better how LodView could change your way to experience Linked Data.
