Hotline is a simple decentralized system for creating and participating in online communities run by individuals all over the world. You can run your own server too. List your server with a Hotline Tracker so others can find it, or don't. Then you and others use the Hotline client to connect to your server or others.
This system was originally designed in the late 90s and was released as a suite of 3 applications for Mac OS. The company Hotline Communications has long since disappeared, but the mechanisms for hosting, tracking, and connecting to the Hotline community live on. Though most people are now used to communicating online with friends, the concept of running your own community for you, your friends, and others is, sadly, still surprisingly novel.
The Internet was designed to allow us to run our own servers. Our own spaces. Right from our computers. Without ads. But this ideal is difficult for any one company to pull off because eventually money needs to be made.
Enter this project. This is an attempt, in a sense, to remaster the Hotline experience from the 90s. But this time make it totally open source. Modernized. Community driven. And free forever.
